Cup of Wrath: FAU and “Jesus Stomping” Dr. Deandre Poole

A South Florida college professor’s bizarre classroom antics have made waves for their shocking display of religious intolerance.  Florida Atlantic University and Professor Deandre Poole each deserve a full draught from the Cup of Wrath for instructing his intercultural communications class to write the name “Jesus” on a piece of paper, then drop it on the floor and stomp on it.

One student, a devout Mormon, was so upset by the exercise that he lodged a formal complaint stating that Dr. Poole had offended his religious convictions.

In fact, the entire campus is in an uproar because the same student was suspended after making a formal complaint.  FAU officials placed Dr. Poole on administrative leave, but insist that they removed him from the classroom only “for safety reasons” after the incident garnered a lot of media attention, not as any sort of indictment against Dr. Poole’s content or methods used in his class. The controversy has even caught the attention of Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R), who labeled the exercise as intolerant against Christianity and called on University System Chancellor Frank Brogan to thoroughly investigate the student’s claims.  A simple web search for Deandre Poole lists him serving as vice chairman of the Palm Beach County Democratic Party – further proof of his liberal political views that are clearly on display in his classroom.

Public backlash against the FAU administration has forced their hands.  FAU released the following statement: “Based on the offensive nature of the exercise, we will not use it again and have issued an apology to the community. It was insensitive and unacceptable. We continue to apologize to all the people who were offended and deeply regret this situation has occurred.” Important to note: FAU isn’t concerned at the content of Dr. Poole’s class; rather, they are just upset that the public got wind of it.  We hope FAU and Poole enjoy every drop from the Cup of Wrath that they so justly deserve.
