In God We Trust hereby bestows "The
Cup of Wrath" on the University of Virginia for its refusal to stand up for Christian members of the UVA community and
punish student editors of the Cavalier Daily for publishing a deeply offensive cartoon featuring profanity and portraying
God in a sexual situation.
The University of Virginia
is a state-supported institution and the Cavalier Daily is an official university publication that relies on school resources
for its publication.
When outraged Americans of varying
faiths confronted the school and complained about the bigoted and state-supported attack, university officials removed the
offensive cartoon from the paper's website but editors never apologized. The newspaper's editors even claimed
the vile cartoon adhered to the university's editorial standards.
The University of Virginia refused to discipline any students involved and refused to issue any type of apology on its own.
Another cartoon ran the day before the one in question and featured a crucified Jesus telling
jokes. It too was removed from the Cavalier Daily website without an apology.
To make matters worse, in 2006 the Cavalier Daily ran cartoons featuring Jesus cursing at a woman and Mary suffering
from venereal disease. Then, like now, the paper and the University refused to apologize and claimed the offensive cartoons
where allowable under the university's editorial guidelines.
For exhibiting a tolerance for bigoted attacks on people of faith and for allowing the resources of a tax-payer subsidized
university to be used to publish those attacks the administration of the University of Virginia has earned itself a
full draught from the Cup of Wrath.
